Draw the same table layout every time, place definite clues first, branch into at most two or three cases, and give each set a 5-6 minute limit. Three timed sets a day for six weeks makes a big difference.
Puzzles and seating are the largest block in Reasoning, often 10-15 questions in Prelims. They reward a fixed method more than talent.
A five-step method
- Identify the type in 10 seconds: floor, box, month/day, linear row, circular table, comparison, or a mix.
- Draw a standard layout: floors as a vertical column, a row as dashes, a circle with fixed positions. Use the same layout every time so you never think about the drawing.
- Place definite clues first: "P lives on floor 3", "A sits at an end". Skip conditional clues for now.
- Branch carefully: when a clue gives two positions, make Case 1 and Case 2 side by side. If you reach four cases, look for a clue that kills one.
- Use negative clues to eliminate: write "not 2, not 5" next to a person. Many puzzles finish once these are used.
Time limits
| Puzzle size | Target time |
|---|---|
| 5-6 people, one variable | 3-4 minutes |
| 7-8 people, two variables | 5-6 minutes |
| Long or unclear | Skip in Prelims, come back if time is left |
Choosing which puzzle to solve
Read the first two or three lines of every puzzle in the section before starting one. Solve the shortest and most familiar first. In the exam, it is normal to leave one hard puzzle unattempted.
Practice plan
- Weeks 1-2: linear and circular seating, 3 sets daily.
- Weeks 3-4: floor, box and scheduling puzzles.
- Weeks 5+: mixed sets with a timer, one set at Mains level each day.
Notation saves time
Use short codes: first letters for people, arrows for facing direction in circular seating, a cross for "not here". Write the variables (colour, city, floor) as column headings before reading clues, so each clue goes straight into a cell.
