What the SBI Clerk job really is
"SBI Clerk" is the popular name. The official post is Junior Associate (Customer Support & Sales) in the clerical cadre of State Bank of India. You join a branch as front-line staff: opening accounts, handling deposits and withdrawals, updating KYC, helping customers with loans, cards and digital banking, and selling the bank's products.
The word "Sales" in the title is not decoration. The 2026 notification says new recruits "must have flair for marketing", will make customer calls and cross-sell products inside and outside the branch, may travel outdoors a lot, and may work flexible hours and shifts. Go in expecting a customer-facing job with targets, not a quiet desk job.
The three stages of selection
As per the 2026 notification (advertisement CRPD/CR/2026-27/17), selection has three phases:
| Phase | What it is | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Phase I: Preliminary exam | Online, 100 questions, 100 marks, 1 hour | Only a screening test. About 10 times the vacancies in each category are shortlisted for Mains. Prelims marks are not added to the final merit. |
| Phase II: Main exam | Online, 190 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours 40 minutes | Your Mains aggregate alone decides the final state-wise, category-wise merit list. |
| Phase III: Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT) | Test of the local language of the state you applied for | Only for those who did not study that language in Class 10 or 12. Fail it and you are not appointed. |
There is no interview and no group discussion. After Mains, your documents and eligibility are verified, and appointment also depends on medical fitness and Know Your Employee (KYE) checks.

Who can apply
The headline rules from the 2026 notification:
- Nationality: Indian citizens.
- Age: 20 to 28 years as on 01.04.2026, which means born between 02.04.1998 and 01.04.2006 (both days included). OBC gets 3 extra years, SC/ST 5 years, PwBD 10 to 15 years depending on category.
- Education: a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Final-year or final-semester students can apply provisionally if they can show they passed on or before 31.12.2026.
- Language: you must be able to read, write, speak and understand the local language of the state you apply for.
- Not eligible: people already working in SBI's clerical cadre, and former SBI clerical staff who resigned.
Marks percentage in graduation does not matter. A pass is enough. Details and edge cases are in our eligibility guide.
The one-state rule you must think about early
You can apply for vacancies in one state or UT only, and you compete only with candidates of that state and your category. If selected, you are posted in that state. The notification also says there is no inter-circle or inter-state transfer before 5 years of service, and even after 5 years it is considered only in exceptional cases such as extreme compassionate or spouse grounds.
So choose your state as if you will live there for at least five years. Check two things before you choose:
- Is your state in the vacancy table this year? The list changes. The 2026 table covered 24 states and UTs, while the 2025 table included others such as Bihar, Delhi and Kerala.
- Do you know the local language listed against that state? If you did not study it in Class 10 or 12, you will have to pass the LLPT.
How a typical cycle runs
Dates move every year, so plan on patterns, not promises. In the last two cycles the notification came in August, Prelims was held in September and Mains was scheduled for November. The 2024 cycle was different: its notification came in December 2024 and Mains was held on 10 and 12 April 2025.
| Cycle | Registration | Prelims | Mains |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 (CRPD/CR/2025-26/06) | 06.08.2025 to 26.08.2025 | Tentatively September 2025 | Held 21 November 2025 |
| 2026 (CRPD/CR/2026-27/17) | 11.08.2026 to 31.08.2026 | Tentatively September 2026 | Tentatively November 2026 |
The lesson: start preparing before the notification. Once it is out, recent cycles have given only about six weeks before Prelims.
Should you apply
SBI Clerk suits you if you want a secure bank job in your own state, are comfortable talking to customers all day, and can handle sales targets. The starting basic pay is ₹26,730 and the notification puts total starting emoluments at around ₹46,000 a month at a metro like Mumbai, inclusive of DA and allowances. There is also a clear internal route to officer posts after a few years.
It may not suit you if you dislike selling, want to move between states freely in the first five years, or cannot work with the local language of your chosen state.
Practically, most serious aspirants also write IBPS Clerk and other bank exams, because the syllabus overlaps heavily. Preparing for SBI Clerk is good preparation for all of them.
Where to start this week
- Read the official notification once, fully. It is 11 pages.
- Take one full Prelims mock without preparing. Your score tells you where you stand.
- Pick a plan from our beginners' strategy guide (3-month or 6-month).
- Practise the high-weight topics first: simplification, arithmetic, puzzles, reading comprehension.
- From week one, read banking news for 20 minutes a day. General/Financial Awareness is 50 marks in Mains and cannot be crammed in a week.
