Pay scale and starting basic pay
As per the 2026 notification (and unchanged from the 2025 one), the pay scale of a Junior Associate is:
₹24050-1340/3-28070-1650/3-33020-2000/4-41020-2340/7-57400-4400/1-61800-2680/1-64480
How to read it: the scale starts at ₹24,050. The first part, "1340/3-28070", means three yearly increments of ₹1,340 take you to ₹28,070. Then three increments of ₹1,650 reach ₹33,020, and so on until the maximum of ₹64,480.
Graduates get two advance increments at joining, so the starting basic pay is ₹26,730 (₹24,050 + 2 x ₹1,340).
Gross salary and in-hand estimate
The notification says total starting emoluments at a metro like Mumbai will be around ₹46,000 a month, inclusive of DA, other allowances at current rates and the two extra increments. Allowances vary with the place of posting.
In-hand pay is lower because of deductions. The main ones are your contribution to the National Pension System (a percentage of basic plus DA), professional tax where the state levies it, union or association fees, and income tax if your annual income crosses the taxable limit.
| Item | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Starting basic pay | ₹26,730 | SBI notification |
| Total starting emoluments, metro | Around ₹46,000 per month | SBI notification |
| In-hand after deductions | Approximately ₹39,000 to ₹43,000 per month | Estimates published by preparation sites such as PW (August 2026), which worked out about ₹42,584 |
Allowances and benefits
Your gross pay is made up of basic pay plus allowances. The notification names DA and "other allowances", and lists these benefits as per the bank's rules:
- Provident fund
- Pension under the New Pension Scheme (defined contribution)
- Medical facilities
- Leave Fare Concession
- Reimbursement of various perquisites
Typical components on a clerk's payslip include Dearness Allowance (linked to inflation and revised periodically), House Rent Allowance (depends on the city class) and special allowances. Exact percentages change with wage settlements, so we do not quote them here.
What the job involves
The post is called Customer Support & Sales. Expect a mix of:
- Counter and back-office work: cash deposits and withdrawals, account opening, KYC updates, passbook and cheque book issues, fixed deposits.
- Customer support: helping with internet and mobile banking, ATM and debit card issues, complaints and service requests.
- Sales: the notification says recruits must have "flair for marketing", make customer calls, provide advisory services and cross-sell products such as loans, insurance and investment products, inside and outside the branch.
- Field work and timings: duties "may involve extensive outdoor travelling", with flexible working hours and shift work depending on requirement.
Probation
New Junior Associates are on probation for a minimum of 6 months. During probation you must complete the e-lessons prescribed by the bank. If you do not finish them, probation is extended until you do. Your performance is also evaluated before probation ends, and it may be extended if performance does not meet the bank's expectations.
You are posted in the state you applied for, and there is no inter-state transfer before 5 years of service.
Career growth and promotion path
Clerks have two broad routes up. SBI's internal promotion policy is not part of the recruitment notification and can change, so the eligibility below is as commonly described by preparation sources such as PracticeMock. Confirm with your branch or HR once you join.
| Route | How it works (as commonly reported) |
|---|---|
| Within the clerical cadre | Higher designations with special allowances after long service, for example Senior Assistant, Special Assistant and Senior Special Assistant |
| Internal exam to officer cadre | Promotion to Trainee Officer / JMGS-I through an internal written test and interview. Commonly quoted minimum service: about 3 years with JAIIB and CAIIB, 4 years with JAIIB, 6 years with neither |
| Direct external route | Write SBI PO or other officer exams while working, if you meet their age and other conditions |
JAIIB and CAIIB are banking qualifications conducted by the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF). Clearing them early, ideally in your first two or three years, keeps the fastest promotion route open.
Is the salary worth it
Compare honestly. A new clerk earns roughly ₹46,000 gross in a metro, a little less in smaller towns because of HRA, and gets job security, a pension contribution, medical cover and a structured promotion path. Against that, the sales targets and long days are real, and you will be in one state for at least five years.
For many graduates, especially those who want to work in their home state, that trade-off is very good. For others, it is a strong first job while preparing for officer-level exams.
