Can I prepare for and appear in SBI PO while working as an SBI Clerk?

Short answer

Yes, if you meet PO eligibility. The 2026 SBI PO notification required age 21-30 on 1 April 2026 and limited chances (6 for General/EWS, 9 for OBC and PwBD, no limit for SC/ST). Serving bank staff need an employer NOC.

Yes. Many SBI clerks prepare for SBI PO, IBPS PO and other officer exams while working. Nothing in the Junior Associate terms stops you, but you must meet the PO notification's own rules.

Paperwork for serving employees

The PO notification asks candidates serving in government offices, PSUs including nationalised banks and financial institutions to submit a No Objection Certificate from the employer at the time of interview, and a proper discharge certificate when taking up the appointment. As an SBI employee, follow SBI's internal process for permission and NOC.

Internal promotion is the other route

SBI's careers page says Junior Associates are eligible for promotion to the officer cadre after 3 years of service. Some clerks choose that route instead, especially if they are close to the PO age limit.

Making it work with a full-time job

  • Study 1.5 to 2 hours on weekdays and longer on Sundays and holidays.
  • Use the commute for current affairs and banking awareness - your job already gives you a head start.
  • Focus on the PO-specific parts: higher-level reasoning and DI, descriptive English, and the interview.
  • Take mocks on weekends to keep your speed.
Start JAIIB soon after joining as well. It brings an increment and supports the internal promotion route if PO does not work out.
PO rules change each year. Check the latest official SBI PO notification before applying.
