Computer awareness in SBI Clerk is tested only in Mains, inside the Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude section, and you can practise it free here across 12 topics from fundamentals and memory to networking, security and databases. Every question has an explanation.
How computer questions appear in SBI Clerk
In SBI Clerk Mains, computer questions are not a separate section. They sit inside "Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude": 50 questions, 60 marks, 45 minutes. The notification does not say how many of the 50 will be computer questions.
Two things follow from that. First, computer questions share a clock with reasoning puzzles, so they need to be answered fast, ideally in under 20 seconds each. Second, since the section carries 60 marks for 50 questions, each question is worth 1.2 marks on average, and a wrong answer costs about 0.3.
The 12 computer topics, grouped
| Group | Topics |
|---|---|
| Basics | Computer fundamentals, history and generations, input and output devices, memory and storage |
| Software | Operating systems, MS Office, shortcut keys, programming languages |
| Connected world | Networking and internet, computer security, database and DBMS, future tech |
Start with basics and software. They are the most direct and the easiest to score.
Six quick sample questions
- How many bits make one byte? 8.
- Which memory loses its contents when power is switched off? RAM. It is volatile; ROM is not.
- Which shortcut undoes the last action in most Windows programs? Ctrl + Z.
- A fake email that tries to make you reveal a password is called? Phishing.
- In a database table, which key uniquely identifies each record? The primary key.
- How many bits long is an IPv4 address? 32 bits. IPv6 uses 128.
These are typical of the level. Questions are short and factual, so the work is in remembering, not calculating.
How to prepare in three weeks
Week 1: basics
Fundamentals, generations, devices, memory. Do 20 questions a day and write units and abbreviations in a list.
Week 2: software and shortcuts
Operating systems, MS Office features and shortcut keys. Try the shortcuts on a real computer; doing them once beats reading them five times.
Week 3: networking, security, databases
These have the most abbreviations (LAN, WAN, HTTP, SQL). Practise until you can expand each one without thinking.
Abbreviations worth knowing cold
| Short form | Full form | Topic |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Central Processing Unit | Fundamentals |
| ALU | Arithmetic Logic Unit | Fundamentals |
| ROM | Read Only Memory | Memory |
| BIOS | Basic Input Output System | Operating systems |
| HTTP | HyperText Transfer Protocol | Internet |
| URL | Uniform Resource Locator | Internet |
| LAN / WAN | Local Area Network / Wide Area Network | Networking |
| SQL | Structured Query Language | DBMS |
| OTP | One Time Password | Security |
Questions often swap one word to catch you, for example "Universal Resource Locator" instead of "Uniform". If you have only half-learnt an abbreviation, that option will look right. Learn the exact words.
Practising computer questions under time
Topic practice is untimed so you can learn. Once a topic is steady, move to Mains sectional mocks for Reasoning and Computer, where computer questions are mixed in with puzzles. A sensible plan in that section is to clear the computer questions early, since they are quick, and then spend the remaining time on reasoning sets.
Track two numbers from each sectional mock: how many computer questions you answered, and how many minutes they took. If computer questions are eating more than eight or nine minutes of the 45, you are reading them too slowly or second-guessing. Go back to topic practice for the weakest one and build recall until the answer comes as soon as you read the question.
See the computer aptitude guide for a deeper topic list.
Questions people ask
Is computer awareness asked in SBI Clerk Prelims?
No. It is tested only in Mains, as part of the Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude section.
How many computer questions come in SBI Clerk Mains?
The notification gives 50 questions for reasoning and computer combined and does not publish a split, so the number can vary.
Do I need a computer science background?
No. The questions are at a general-user level: hardware basics, Office, internet and security. A few weeks of regular practice is usually enough.
Which computer topics should I start with?
Start with computer fundamentals, memory and storage, MS Office and shortcut keys. They are direct and quick to learn. Then move to networking, security and databases, which have more abbreviations to remember.
