Can I apply for more than one state in SBI Clerk?

ApplicationUpdated 2026-10-23
Short answer

No. You can apply for vacancies of only one State/UT in a recruitment cycle, and you can appear for the test only once. Your candidature is considered only against that State/UT.

No. The 2026 notification says candidates can apply for vacancies in one State/UT only, and candidates can appear for the test only once under the recruitment project. Your candidature is considered only against the vacancies in the State/UT you choose.

What the one-state rule controls

  • Merit list: drawn up state-wise and category-wise. You compete only within your chosen State/UT and category.
  • Posting: if selected, you are posted in that State.
  • Language: you need proficiency in its specified local language.
  • Medium of exam: the regional language option in Prelims and Mains depends on the State you applied for.

What if I apply twice for two states?

It does not work as a workaround. If a candidate submits more than one application, only the last valid (completed) application is retained and the fees for the others are forfeited. Multiple attendance or appearance in the exam is summarily rejected and candidature is cancelled.

States with more than one circle

Some states are split between circles. In the 2026 notification, candidates applying for Maharashtra (Maharashtra Circle or Mumbai Metro Circle) and Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow Circle) were asked to check the operational areas of the circles on SBI's branch locator before applying.

Choosing your one state

FactorWhy it matters
Local languageYou must read, write, speak and understand it.
Vacancies in your categoryMore seats can help, but more applicants usually follow.
Transfer rule2026: no inter-state transfer before 5 years of service.
Family and cost of livingYou may live there for years.
This rule has been the same in the 2024, 2025 and 2026 notifications, but always confirm it in the latest official SBI notification.
