Can I prepare for SBI Clerk and SBI PO together?

ComparisonsUpdated 2026-10-23
Short answer

Yes. The syllabus overlaps heavily, so prepare Quant, Reasoning and English at PO level, add speed drills for Clerk Prelims, descriptive writing for PO Mains and Computer Aptitude for Clerk Mains. GA is common to both.

Most serious bank aspirants prepare for both. The topics are the same; the difference is depth, speed and the extra stages for PO.

What is common

  • Quant: simplification, arithmetic, DI, series, quadratic
  • Reasoning: puzzles, seating, syllogism, inequality, coding
  • English: RC, errors, fillers, para jumbles, cloze
  • GA: banking, RBI, economy, current affairs, schemes

What each needs extra

Clerk extraPO extra
Higher speed in Prelims (35 Quant questions in 20 minutes)Harder DI and data analysis (Mains has 30 questions for 60 marks)
Computer Aptitude in MainsDescriptive paper: email, situation analysis, report or precis (30 marks)
Local language proficiencyPsychometric test, group exercise and interview

The 2026 timeline shows why this works

The SBI PO 2026 notification gave Prelims in August, Mains in September and the final phase in October/November 2026. The Clerk notification gave Prelims in September and Mains in November 2026. Preparing at PO level through the summer meant Clerk Prelims came while your speed was already high.

A weekly balance

  • 4 days: PO-level Quant and Reasoning practice
  • 1 day: Clerk-style speed drills and a Clerk Prelims mock
  • Daily: GA (1 hour) and English (1 hour)
  • Twice a week: one descriptive answer (email or essay) for PO

Descriptive practice in 20 minutes a day

For the PO descriptive paper, write one short piece a day: an email (greeting, purpose in the first line, details, clear request, closing) or a short situation analysis. Type it on a computer, since the PO notification says descriptive answers are typed. This also improves your English for Clerk Mains.

PO has a limit on the number of attempts (6 for UR/EWS in 2026, counted when you appear in Mains); the Clerk notification does not state one. Check your age and chances in each notification.
