SBI PO is an officer post with a harder three-phase selection (Prelims, Mains with a descriptive paper, then psychometric test, group exercise and interview) and higher pay. SBI Clerk is a clerical post selected through Prelims and Mains only, recruited state-wise.
Same bank, different cadre. A Junior Associate works in the clerical cadre, mostly at the branch counter and in customer service and sales. A Probationary Officer joins Junior Management Grade Scale-I and is trained for officer and management roles.

- Clerk: recruited for one state; the 2026 notification says no inter-circle transfer before 5 years of service. Good if you want to work near home.
- PO: higher pay and responsibility, a tougher exam, and a longer selection process. The notification describes postings and growth across the bank, including opportunities abroad.
Preparation gap
The biggest extra demands for PO are higher-level DI and data analysis, the descriptive paper and the interview. For Clerk, the biggest demand is speed in Prelims. A candidate strong in Clerk Mains is already part of the way to PO.
