Why the totals are not directly comparable
- The clerk figure is monthly emoluments: basic, DA and other allowances.
- The PO figure is cost to company, which usually includes items you do not receive as monthly cash, such as the bank's contributions and the value of perquisites like leased accommodation or medical cover.
- Take-home pay for both is lower after tax, NPS contributions and other deductions.
Reading a pay scale
"24,050-1,340/3-28,070" means the basic starts at Rs 24,050 and rises by Rs 1,340 a year for three years to Rs 28,070, then continues with the next increment. DA is revised periodically, so the total changes even without a promotion.
Other differences
- Allowances vary by place of posting, so the same post pays differently in a metro and a small town.
- Both get provident fund, pension under NPS, medical and leave fare facilities as per bank rules.
- The PO notification mentions a Rs 2 lakh bond for three years of service; the clerk notification does not.
Growth over time
Both scales have yearly increments, and pay also rises with DA revisions and wage settlements. Officers can move up management grades through promotions. Clerks can move to officer cadre through the bank's internal promotion process, subject to its rules at the time.
