Record every wrong or guessed question with the topic, the reason you got it wrong and the correct method in one line. Redo the questions after 2 days and 7 days, and remove them only when you get them right twice.
A mistake book stops you losing marks to the same error twice. Most candidates repeat the same handful of mistakes across mocks. Writing them down and redoing them is one of the cheapest ways to raise scores.
What to record
| Column | Example |
|---|---|
| Date and source | 12 Oct, Prelims mock 7, Q 54 |
| Topic | Profit and loss |
| Reason | Took discount on cost price, not marked price |
| Correct idea (one line) | Discount is always on marked price |
| Redo dates | 14 Oct right, 19 Oct right, remove |
What to include
- Every wrong answer from mocks and practice
- Every question you got right by guessing
- Questions that took more than twice the normal time
The redo routine
- After 2 days: redo without looking at the solution.
- After 7 days: redo again.
- If right both times, mark it done. If wrong, keep it and read the solution again.
Weekly review
On Sunday, count mistakes by topic and by reason. If "calculation" is the top reason, add drills. If one topic appears five times in a week, give it a full study session.
Digital or paper
Either works. A digital mistake book that automatically collects wrong answers saves time; a paper notebook is better for writing your own one-line lessons. Many people use both: let the tool collect questions, and keep a short notebook of lessons.
Good and bad lesson lines
A bad lesson: "Be careful in profit and loss." A good lesson: "Discount is on marked price; profit is on cost price." The second tells you exactly what to do next time. Write every lesson so that it would help you in the middle of the exam.
