Is a good CIBIL score or clean credit history required for SBI Clerk?

EligibilityUpdated 2026-10-23
Short answer

There is no minimum CIBIL score. The 2025 notification said candidates with unpaid defaults on loans or credit cards would not be eligible for appointment unless they repaid before the offer letter. Check whether the latest notification has the same clause.

SBI does not ask for a minimum CIBIL score. What some notifications do have is a rule about loan defaults.

What the 2025 notification said

The 2025 Junior Associate notification (CRPD/CR/2025-26/06) said that candidates who have defaulted in repayment under any lending arrangement with banks or NBFCs, including credit card dues, and have not regularised or repaid the outstanding by the date the offer of appointment is issued, would not be eligible for appointment. If you had repaid but your CIBIL status had not yet been updated, you could, on or before joining, either get the status updated or produce NOCs from the lender.

What the 2026 notification says

The regular 2026 Junior Associate notification (CRPD/CR/2026-27/17) that we reviewed does not carry this clause in its eligibility notes. The SBI PO 2026 notification, however, does include a similar CIBIL clause. Because the rule has appeared in recent SBI recruitments, treat it as something that can come back in any cycle.

What you should do

  • Check your credit report once before applying. Bureaus such as CIBIL allow free reports.
  • If you have overdue EMIs or credit card dues, clear them and get a no-dues letter or NOC from the lender.
  • Education loans that are being repaid as per schedule are not defaults. A default means overdue amounts you have not regularised.
  • Keep the NOCs with your joining documents in case SBI asks.

Background checks still apply

Separately from credit history, SBI makes appointment subject to medical fitness, satisfactory Know Your Employee (KYE) formalities and disclosure of any pending criminal cases, with possible police verification. Candidates with adverse reports on character and antecedents are not eligible.

Whether a credit clause applies depends on the notification you apply under. Read the eligibility notes in the latest official SBI notification carefully.
