For most people, the home state is the better choice. You can apply in only one state, you must be proficient in that state's local language, and the 2026 notification allows no inter-state transfer for the first five years.
Choosing a state is a bigger decision than it looks. Vacancy numbers are only one part of it.
Rules from the 2026 notification
- You can apply for vacancies in one State/UT only.
- You should be proficient (reading, writing, speaking and understanding) in the specified local language of that State/UT.
- If you did not study that language in Class 10 or 12, you must pass a Local Language Proficiency Test after Mains. Failing it means no appointment.
- There is no inter-circle or inter-state transfer before five years of service. After that, transfers are considered only in exceptional cases, at the bank's discretion.
Home state vs another state
| Factor | Home state | Another state |
|---|---|---|
| Local language | Usually already known | May need to learn to test level |
| Living for 5+ years | Near family, lower costs | Relocation, rent, adjustment |
| Vacancies | Whatever your state has | Possibly more seats |
| Competition | Varies | More seats can also attract more applicants |
When another state can make sense
If you genuinely know the other state's language well (for example you grew up there or studied it in school), and you are ready to live there for at least five years, it can be a reasonable choice. Choosing a state only for seat numbers, without the language, is risky.
Where to see vacancies
The notification has a state-wise, category-wise table with the local language for each state. In 2026, for example, Maharashtra (Mumbai Metro circle) had 1,718 regular vacancies and Karnataka 760.
Questions to ask yourself
- Can I read, write, speak and understand the state's language well enough to pass a test and serve customers?
- Am I prepared to live there for five years or more?
- Have I compared seats with my category, not just the total?
Rules can change with each notification. Confirm on sbi.bank.in/web/careers.
